Leesburg High School Senior Wins National Position in SkillsUSA

Leesburg High School senior Alexis Gamez has been elected Region 2 Vice President of SkillsUSA, the first Lake County School student to hold a national position in the career and technical student organization in 70 years.

A culinary and health science student at Leesburg High, Gamez has served in various positions within SkillsUSA over the past three years and decided to pursue a national position going into her senior year.

The election was decided by five state delegates who make their decision based on how much support each candidate is able to get from their peers. Gamez took to the internet to campaign for a national position June 15-24 and won the title of Vice President for Region 2.

SkillsUSA brings together students, teachers, and industry to ensure America has a skilled workforce.

Gamez’s long-term career goal is to become a nurse after high school. Being part of SkillsUSA has helped her to network and become more career-ready, she said.

“I think this position will change my life,” said Gamez. “It’s already opened so many doors and opportunities. I’m blessed to be in this organization,” said Gamez.
